I was very excited this morning when I opened the oven. No, I didn’t bake my famous brownies or chocolate cherry Bundt cake. I baked the nine glass bowls that my Young At Heart senior artists had painted on Friday. We had a lot of fun creating them, but the greatest joy came from the fact that these bowls were going to be donated to St. Peter’s Empty Bowls fundraiser. Our little group is honored to be able to support this project that will help to feed the hungry. Last week, Krys Watson, led the group in decoupaging another batch of bowls. Our total is nineteen beautiful bowls to share.
Empty Bowls is a nationwide campaign to combat hunger. Each community develops its own style of Empty Bowls event. Typically a soup dinner is prepared and handmade bowls are “bought” with a donation of $20. In McKinney, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church hosts the soup dinner. Your ticket allows you to pick out one of the many donated bowls that you can take home to display as a reminder of the many that go hungry every day. Because there are so many fine artists in town, the organizers added an online silent auction for fine art bowls. All proceeds from the auction will go to the cause.
The Empty Bowls soup dinner is at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Thursday, Feb. 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Handmade bowls for the event have been made by parishioners, the youth groups, kids club and local artists. Soup sponsors are Gregory’s Bistro, Hamm’s Custom Meats, The Pantry, Patina Green, Rick’s Chophouse, San Miguel Grill and SNUG on the Square. All proceeds will benefit Community Lifeline. Tickets are sold through the church and at the door for $20.

If you are able to attend this event, you will enjoy some delicious soup, bread, dessert and a beverage, but you will treasure the bowl that someone created with their sharing and caring hands and hearts.
