Tuesday Tip of the Day: Find Beauty Among the Thorns

1 Oct

“Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.”
― Alphonse Karr, A Tour Round My Garden
My morning walk is often a source of inspiration for my daily post, as was the case today. I went to Zumba at 8:30, but scurried home right afterwards because I forgot my cell phone at home, which means, I also wasn’t able to call my mom, as is my ritual as I drive to my class. (Don’t worry. I have hands free and only talk a few minutes.)

When I got home, I grabbed my phone, headed out the door, called Mom while I went for a long walk. (Did you notice, I can’t do just one thing at a time?) I didn’t find any nails, but, when I was walking past the path with a row of Knock Out roses, I noticed a paper wrapped around the thorny base of one of the bushes. I looked closer and saw a picture of Jesus carrying His cross.

Whoa! Kinda symbolic. Crown of thorns. I reached in and took the little pamphlet written in Spanish. “ESTE ES MI HIJO AMADO, EN EL CUAL TENGO CONTENTAMIENTO.” (This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.) I fully expected to get scratched by the thorns, but I did not.

I’m still struggling with some things, and my head is always spinning with painful thoughts, but my long walks help me cope with an almost zen-like meditation. I’m always searching to find something beautiful or meaningful to distract me. The good news is, I usually do. Today, it was a little reminder that sometimes we have a cross to bear. Life goes on, and if we can handle the thorns, we can appreciate the roses.

I know, I know! Sometimes the signs are very vociferous.
