Friday Friends, Facebook, and Finding Rita

8 Aug

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.”

― Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

Friday again? Kickboxing 8:30-9:30, stop at store to get snacks and treats for my senior art group where I volunteer, visit with Miss Karri at Papa Murphy, scoot home, put ice cream in freezer, go for 40 min. walk in crazy heat, shower, go to Towne Creek, home by 6:30, check emails, now writing my blog. Zip, zip, the day is gone.

My artist friends at Towne Creek were so happy to see me. I hadn’t been there since June. I showed them Joe and Lindsay’s wedding pictures, then I made root beer floats and we sketched flowers in a vase. Fun!

Yesterday , I received a Facebook friend request from someone named Rita. Hmm? Who was that? When I looked at her page, we had one common friend… My mom. Oh! Cousin Rita, Uncle Jesse’s daughter. We haven’t seen each other in…maybe 40 or 50 years. Wow! So, of course I responded yes to the friend request.

Cousin Rita called me a little while ago. Surprise! She had called my mom to get my phone number. We talked for a very long time about the old days, family, parents, children, and stupid, lying, cheating ex-husbands. We laughed when we realized how long it had been. She was thinking I was in my forties and I thought she was in her fifties. Well, tack on another twenty years. Yikes!

It’s funny, when you haven’t seen someone in a very long time, you remember them as so much younger. It’s always fun to find an old friend or family member. Thank you Facebook!

Hi, Cousin Rita! You are just as beautiful and charming as I remember.
