Sunday Sermon and Other Stuff

“You can help change the world, one smile at a time.”

~Toni Armenta Andrukaitis

“Your profession is not what brings home your weekly paycheck, your profession is what you’re put here on earth to do, with such passion and such intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.”

Vincent Van Gogh

I was able to attend Mass at Mom’s little chapel this morning. Mom wasn’t up to attending. The Gospel was a good one,..

Today’s Gospel was the story of Jesus healing the sick and possessed. He left early to pray, and his disciples searched for Him. Jesus said He needed to go to other villages to preach and heal. That was His calling,

Rising very early before dawn, he left

and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Simon and those who were with him pursued him

and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages

that I may preach there also.

For this purpose have I come.”

So he went into their synagogues,

preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

The volunteer from St. Thomas More gave his homily, relating the passage to his childhood. Ray said that when he was younger and attended Catholic grammar school, he told Mother Superior that he wanted to become a priest when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. Sister looked at his grades, seeing what classes he registered for in high school, and knowing him for those nine years said, “Maybe you should stick with an English major.”

We all laughed and Ray said that she knew what she was talking about. But he added, as Catholics, we are all called to evangelize and share our faith with others. He is able to bring the Mass and the Eucharist to those who can’t get to church, and is active in his parish. That is his calling now. He said we are never too old or too young to know and share your calling.

His words made me think of my calling. I started out being a teacher, then raised my little family, and sometimes I felt like I never fulfilled my real calling. Did I waste my talents? But, now that I think of it, I share my words and stories s with friends and strangers. I share my art work and talents with many. I volunteer in my community and church, and I like to think I bring smiles and joy to a few people. I talk to strangers and they become new friends. That is my true calling. I try to change the world, one smile at a time.
