Easter Sunday: Prayers, Blessings, and Friendship

21 Apr

“Be not forgetful of prayer. Every time you pray, if your prayer is sincere, there will be new feeling and new meaning in it, which will give you fresh courage, and you will understand that prayer is an education.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
************
It was a strange morning. I left a little earlier than usual for 9o’clock Mass, as it was Easter Sunday, and it was sure to be crowded at St. Gabriel’s. Oh my! Not only was the entire lot jammed, the side grassy areas over the curbs were filled with cars. I drove around a while and couldn’t find a spot. So, I decided to leave, hang out at McDonald’s for a little bit, then catch the next Mass.

As I stood in line at McD’s, I thought, this is crazy. I’ll have the same dilemma later, so I went home, looked up the Mass schedule for St. Michael’s on the east side of town. There was an 11:30 service. Perfect! I arrived a little after 11, had no trouble parking, and it was a beautiful Mass. I’d never been to this church, but always wanted to visit.

As an added bonus, after Mass, I was able to go up next to the altar and light a candle by the statue of Our lady of Guadalupe. Funny candle story… I was looking all over for that long, thin stick, lighter thingy that lights the candle, only to discover a tiny red push button that lights an electrical pretend flame in the votive. Ay, technology! Then, to the right of the Virgin was a St. Joseph statue. Even better. I had my St. Joseph statue in my purse that Sherry gave me that will help me sell my house. I know, I know! it sounds crazy, but it works. If you aren’t familiar with the back story, just look up St. Joseph and selling your house. So, I said my prayer to St. Joseph and will bury him tomorrow.

Our Lady of Guadalupe. She’s a little blurry because I was trying to discreetly take a picture.

I said my special prayer and asked for His blessing.

After church, I was invited to Sherri and Michael Murphy’s for brunch. It was a lovely family gathering, complete with an Easter egg hunt for the grand-kids, and massive quantities of delicious food. I felt just like part of the family. I hope they adopt me because Sherri is a wonderful cook. Then, I stopped to visit Lynne and Charlie who live just a couple streets away.

My day started out a little shaky, but it turned out to be filled with special prayers, blessings, and friendship. Later in the evening, both my sons called and we talked for a long time, making my day truly blessed.

Friday Friends and Flaws

8 Mar

“Here’s all you have to know about men and women: women are crazy, men are stupid. And the main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid.”
― George Carlin
**************
My dear friend Kay sent me the email below. It pretty much sums up how I feel about all my wonderful friends, real sisters and best friends who are like sisters. These women are amazing. Don’t forget your worth and thank you for reminding me of my own. You know who you are. “LOVE YOU!”
**************
One Flaw In Women

Women have strengths that amaze men…

They bear hardships and they carry burdens,

But they hold happiness, love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.

They sing when they want to cry.

They cry when they are happy

And laugh when they are nervous.

They fight for what they believe in…

They stand up to injustice.

They don’t take “no” for an answer

When they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.

They go to the

Doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally.

They cry when their children excel

And cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about

A birth or a wedding.

Their hearts break when a friend dies.

They grieve at the loss of a family member,

Yet they are strong when they

Think there is no strength left.

They know that a hug and a kiss

Can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They’ll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you

To show how much they care about you.

The heart of a woman is what

Makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.

They have compassion and ideas.

They give moral support to their

Family and friends.

Women have vital things to say

And everything to give..

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS

ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,

IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

Please pass this along to all your women friends and relatives to remind them just how amazing they are…

Theme Song Thursday:Sons

7 Mar

Happy is the son whose faith in his mother remains unchallenged.
~ Louisa May Alcott
****************
Tossing and turning all night, was replaced with fumbling and rumbling with the early morning sun. What started out as another cookie cutter gloomy day was instantly revitalized with a single phone call.

Who could be calling at 7:15 in the morning? You know how your mind goes into panic mode in those three seconds it takes to answer the phone?

“Hi Mom. Were you sleeping? Thought I’d call you before I went to work.”

“Sigh… No, Mijo, I’ve been awake for a while.”

We talked for around twenty minutes, just about this and that, the weekend, the weather, just small talk with a big impact. Matt said he was busy and sorry he hadn’t called over the weekend, and he just wanted to check and see how I was doing. If he only knew how much that meant to me. My heart tingled. When I hung up the phone, I smiled, jumped out of bed, and started my perfect happy day.

Sometimes happiness is only a phone call away.

CELINE DION LYRICS

“If I Could”

If I could
I’d protect you from the sadness in your eyes
Give you courage in a world of compromise
Yes, I would

If I could
I would teach you all the things I’ve never learned
And I’d help you cross the bridges that I’ve burned
Yes, I would

If I could
I would try to shield your innocence from time
But the part of life I gave you isn’t mine
I’ve watched you grow
So I could let you go

If I could
I would help you make it through the hungry years
But I know that I can never cry your tears
But I would
If I could

If I live
In a time and place where you don’t want to be
You don’t have to walk along this road with me
My yesterday
Won’t have to be your way

If I knew
I’d have tried to change the world I brought to you to
And there isn’t very much that I can do
But I would
If I could…
Oh baby… mummy wants to protect you
And help my baby through the hungry years
It’s part of me
And if you ever… ever need
Sad shoulder to cry on
I’m just someone to talk to
I’ll be there… I’ll be there
I didn’t change your world
But I would
If I Could!

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Your Comfort Zone

6 Mar

“When you stay in your comfort zone and don’t venture out, you don’t get anywhere or experience anything new.” ( or something to that effect.)
~ JoAnn Armenta
**************
Yes, JoAnn, I quoted you today. JoAnn is my sister, a couple years older and wiser, and full of words of wisdom. I often tell her, “You’re full of it!” Just kidding.

This evening, I was telling her that I had been invited to join a small neighborhood book club, and I wasn’t sure if I should should join. I know all the ladies and I adore them, but, my problem is, I’m not much of a reader. Hmmm…? You are probably wondering how I ever hope to be a world famous novelist and author if I don’t like to read. Good question. Here’s the answer…I won’t!

When Jo mentioned that she regrets staying in her comfort zone and not venturing out, I immediately thought, first of all, that’s a great quote and I’m going to steal it, then I realized that I do the same thing.

After I hung up the phone, I replied to the email that invited me to join the book club with a resounding, “Yes, I’d be honored.” Now, I have to go find the book, “Beautiful Ruins,” by Jess Walter. My library has it on disks, but 11 disks! I’m one of those people that can’t listen to audio books because I can’t sit still, so twelve hours of someone talking at me ain’t gonna work.

20140305-184226.jpg
So, if you’ve read the book already, let me know if you liked it. (Also, if I could borrow it. Ha, ha!) And, if you didn’t like it, just keep that to yourself. I’m easily desuaded. Thanks!

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Sharing

27 Feb

Life’s a funny thing, the minute you think youve got everything figured, something comes along and turns it all upside down. -Zayn Malik
**********
Sometimes I just plain ol’ feel sorry for myself, stumbling through life, thinking, “Why me?” But then, there are other times when you hear or read about what other people have had to face. It makes you appreciate your life a little more.

My friend, Laura Bartlett, sent me a link to a story written by a friend of hers. He shared a heart-warming story of… “How I Went from TV Producer to Blue-Collar Worker, and What I Learned.” It definitely will make you appreciate your life, your job, and what you’ll do for your family. Larry Kingery Fojtik, thanks for sharing.

Foot Fetish Friday

22 Feb

Whenever I see your smiling face
I have to smile myself
Because I love you (Yes, I do)
-James Taylor
************
Ah, you are probably wondering…foot fetish, what’s that all about? I was trying to decide what to write about today, so I went through my thousands of pictures on my iPad for inspiration. (I do that a lot.)

I ran across this picture of my boys when they were just knee high to a grasshopper. Wow! That’s an old one. It reminded me of happy times when every little thing my babies did was amazing. Now, my babies are grown men, far away from my yearning eyes and arms, but they still make me smile.

My ringtone on my cell phone plays James Taylor’s, “Your Smiling Face, whenever my boys call. So appropriate! Another James Taylor kinda day.
***************
Whenever I see your smiling face
I have to smile myself
Because I love you (Yes, I do)
And when you give me that pretty little pout
It turns me inside out
There’s something about you, baby (I don’t know)……………

I bet this made you smile too!

Some Sound Advice, Some Funny Sayings, and Singing With the Beatles

10 Feb

“May I share with you a formula that in my judgment will help you and help me to journey well through mortality… First, fill your mind with truth; second, fill your life with service; and third, fill your heart with love.”
― Thomas S. Monson
******************
Excellent advice and a life to strive for. As in most things, easier said than done, but worthy of every effort. I do believe that truth is very important, not only the words you tell others, but the words you tell yourself. I need to work on that. Sometimes that is the hardiest truth. Service is equally as important. Service and helping people is another gift that nourishes your soul. Then, filling your heart with love, family and friendship completes the formula.

Being thankful is the key.

20140209-193405.jpg
This is funny, but true. If you survived a catholic education! you can survive anything. Amen. Now sit down and fold your hands.

20140209-193611.jpg
OK, this one was just cerebral and amusing,
Now, for the Beatles? CBS is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. I’m singing along…as I tend to do. I remember it like it was “YESTERDAY.” Get it? “Yesterday, life was such an easy game to play.”

Friday Friends and More Birthdays

31 Jan

Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.”
― Larry Lorenzoni
***************
The nice thing about having so many friends is that you get to celebrate your birthday at least a dozen times a year. This year, I was in Chicago and was able to celebrate my birthday with my mom and her lady friends and my sister in the morning. Then, I took the train downtown and celebrated with my sons. Another day, I celebrated with my old bowling buddies. This Wednesday, I celebrated with the TOTS, my artist girlfriends. Thursday was lunch with my Zumba friends. Today, my friends at Towne Creek, the YAH-YAHs, Young At Heart senior artist gave me a surprise birthday party, with tons of food, cake, fruit, snacks, flowers and presents. I am one lucky gal.

The Young At Heart Artists. Thanks Miss Krys for all your hard work and teaching and sharing while I was gone.

20140131-201208.jpg
Every year I say, “This is the best birthday ever,” and it’s true. Every year I have more and more friends to celebrate with.

I’m not getting older, I’m just getting to celebrate more!

Wednesday Words of Wisdom: Mothers

30 Jan

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
― Washington Irving
My mother is my truest friend. She gave me life, and I know she would give her life for me. I’d like to think that I am a good, kind, loyal and loving person, but these qualities were learned at my mother’s knee. Children learn from example, and I had the best role model in the world.

Tonight, I called Mom to ask her what her motherly words of wisdom or advice would be. She thought about it for a long time, but couldn’t think of anything to say. Then, I realized that she really didn’t have to say the words, she just lived the words.

I was thrilled that I got to spend three weeks with Mom. I miss her already, and she misses me like crazy. I hope that my two sons feel that that I was a good role model, and I am their truest friend. I gave them life and I would give my life for them.
