Theme Song Thursday and Theme Word for 2015

2 Jan

“For within your flesh, deep within the center of your being, is the undaunted, waiting, longing, all-knowing. Is the ready, able, perfect. Within you, waiting its turn to emerge, piece by piece, with the dawn of every former test of trial and blackness, is the next unfolding, the great unfurling of wings, the re-forged backbone of a true Child of Light.”
― Jennifer DeLucy

Today is the first day of 2015. It’s a new day, a new year, a new everything. Many of my friends pick a word that will be their mantra or theme to give them inspiration for the entire year. I always struggle to find the perfect word. What would you choose?

I thought long and hard, and I knew it had to be a word that began with “re.” I went to the dictionary and thesaurus, and looked at every word that started with “re.” There are a lot, believe me. Here’s what I came up with…

re·new·al\ri-ˈnü-əl, -ˈnyü-\
: the act of extending the period of time when something is effective or valid : the act of renewing something
: the state of being made new, fresh, or strong again : the state of being renewed
Full Definition
1 : the act or process of renewing : repetition
2 : the quality or state of being renewed
3 : something (as a subscription to a magazine) renewed
4 : something used for renewing; specifically : an expenditure that betters existing fixed assets
5 : the rebuilding of a large area (as of a city) by a public authority

I like RENEWAL! A state of being made new, fresh, or strong again. I especially like being made strong again. Yes, that’s the perfect word. This will be my word for 2015.

Do you have a word? What is it? If you don’t have one yet, think about it, and let me know what word you picked.

I looked for the perfect theme song for today. I almost picked a sad song, but then found this. Yep! This, is much better.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, MY FRIENDS! It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new year.

Theme Song Thursday: Mothers

12 Sep

One of my favorite sayings is, “The NUT doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I tell Mom this all the time. She tries to correct me and says it’s suppose to be the apple, and I simply say, “No, you’re a nut and so am I.” My sweet mother has been a blessing and inspiration, not only to her children, but to everyone who has crossed her path. I hope to continue to follow in her footsteps and be a “nut” just like her.

When my sister told me that two of Mom’s paintings were going to be on display at the Latina Art League of Chicago in Elgin, I was so very proud to be her daughter. At eighty-six, she is still active and finally receiving the recognition and accolades that she has long deserved. My sister, JoAnn, has been her sincerest advocate and promoter, and is also proud to be one of those “nuts.” The beautiful strong tree named Trinidad Armenta, has planted her seeds and spread her roots, and we all are blessed for knowing her. She is our Guardian Angel.

Theme Song Thursday: Something’s Coming

14 Jun

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
William Shakespeare

The self-fulfilling prophecy is a statement that alters actions and therefore comes true. For example, a person stating “I’m probably going to have a lousy day,” might alter his actions so that such a prediction is fulfilled by his actions. This may be an unconscious gesture. A person who might espouse a self-fulfilling prophecy in a positive way “I’m going to have a great day,” might act in ways that will actually make this prediction true.

I’ve been listening to my “West Side Story” CD in the car. Of course, I always sing along while I’m driving. One song in particular has resonated strongly with me. I like to think I am an extremely positive person, but when I’m belting out the words to this song, something takes control of my brain, making me believe that something great is going to happen. I wake up every morning and say to myself, “What a wonderful day! I can’t wait to see what happens!” A self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps! Try it…you’ll like it!

SOMETHING’S COMING from West Side Story
Could be
Who knows?
There’s something due any day
I will know right away
Soon as it shows
It may come cannonballin’ down through the sky
Gleam in its eye
Bright as a rose!
Who knows?
It’s only just out of reach
Down the block, on a beach
Under a tree
I got a feeling there’s a miracle due
Gonna come true
Coming to me
Could it be?
Yes it could
Something’s coming
Something good
If I can wait
Something’s coming I don’t know what it is
But it is
Gonna be great!
With a click
With a shock
Phone’ll jingle
Door’ll knock
Open the latch!
Something’s coming, don’t know when
But it’s soon
Catch the moon
One handed catch
Around the corner
Or whistling down the river
Come on – deliver
To me
Will it be? Yes it will
Maybe just by holding still
It’ll be there!
Come on, something, come on in
Don’t be shy
Meet a guy
Pull up a chair
The air is hummin’
And something great is coming
Who knows
It’s only just
Out of reach
Down the block, on a beach
Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight…

Theme Song Thursday: Happy Birthday to Mom

7 Jun

Today was the big day, Mom’s birthday. I got up early to bake cupcakes and make frosting, and my sister bought a beautifully decorated chocolate cake for our 10am celebration with all her friends in the activity room. Mom’s usual coffee clutch friends were already waiting for her by the time we came down. Friends sprinkled in during the course of our three hour tour.(Gilligan reference.) Happy birthday was sung many times, as well as Las Mañanitas. (Traditional Mexican birthday song.) A good time was had by all!

In the spirit of family nostalgia, I spent a couple hours browsing through family photos after dinner. Mom’s maiden name is Aguirre, so I thought the Addam’s Family theme song would be appropriate for theme song Thursday. I used literary license and changed the name to The Aguirre Family. Hum along if you don’t get the YouTube video. And yes, her family is kooky, spooky and ooky.(Not really creepy, but that’s just my opinion.)

The Aguirre Family………………….

They’re creepy and they’re kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They’re all together ooky,
The Aguirre Family.
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see ’em
They really are a scream
The Aguirre Family.
So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We’re gonna pay a call on
The Aguirre Family

The Aguirre Family (Mom is the oldest child in the middle…many more followed)

Happy Birthday, Mom!!! You’re the greatest!

Theme Song Thursday

10 May

Friendships are very special. Did you ever just sit down and think of all the friends you’ve made throughout your life? I’m sure the list would be daunting. But, what about our husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, daughters or sons? We usually don’t think of them as our friends, but they really are. Family or friends, why can’t they be both? We certainly depend on each other and share so much of our lives.

I was thinking about family and friends today, and I remembered the old television show, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” from 1969-1972. It had the coolest theme song about best friends. Widower, Tom Corbett, was manipulated by his young son who kept trying to find his dad a wife. But, Little Eddie was Tom’s best friend, and father and son had wonderful adventures together. (This is where you say, “Awwwww!”) Something to think about.

People let me tell you ’bout my best friend
He’s a warm hearted person who’ll love me till the end
People let me tell you bout my best friend
He’s a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy

People let me tell you ’bout him he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talkin’ man to man or whether we’re talking son to son
Cause he’s my best friend. yes he’s my best friend

Theme Song Thursday

3 May

My youngest son is visiting from Chicago for a few days. He is kind, considerate, and unassuming. He had plans with his dad for almost every minute of his four day stay.(Dad’s plans of course) But, he suggested that they meet Mom (That’s my boy) for lunch after golf and before going to the Rangers/White Sox game. Unfortunately, the Texas weather is unseasonably cold and rainy for a few days, and his stay will be yucky outside, but my heart is all warm and fuzzy inside because my baby is here. My baby is a couple months shy of thirty, but to me he is still my little boy.

Child of Mine by Carole King

Although you see the world different than me
Sometimes I can touch upon the wonders that you see
All the new colors and pictures you’ve designed
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

You don’t need direction, you know which way to go
And I don’t want to hold you back, I just want to watch you grow
You’re the one who taught me you don’t have to look behind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Nobody’s gonna kill your dreams
Or tell you how to live your life
There’ll always be people to make it hard for a while
But you’ll change their heads when they see you smile

The times you were born in may not have been the best
But you can make the times to come better than the rest
I know you will be honest if you can’t always be kind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine,
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Theme Song Thursday: McKinney, Where Everybody Knows Your Name

21 Mar

You know what I love about living in McKinney, Texas? Well, just about everything. I’m not extremely fond of the summer heat that can get into triple digits, but that’s what air conditioning is for. Right? That’s it. I love all the rest. The people are great, the economy is thriving, and there are so many things to do and places to go. There are great restaurants, wonderful shops, and fun activities. From the day we moved here in ’04, McKinney has been a Shangri-La. I’ve made hundreds of friends here, and when I take a stroll on the Square, I bump into dozens of people who say, “Hi, Toni! How’s it going?” It’s kinda like CHEERS. “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, And they’re always glad you came…”

Recently, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Stuart Pearlman of Town Square Buzz about why I love my town and all the things I’m involved in. We didn’t even get into my tennis teams, neighborhood activities, and art groups. We would have needed a 5 hour mini-series. I like to call it my 5 minutes of fame.

Cheers – Themesong lyrics

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

All those night when you’ve got no lights,
The check is in the mail;
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it’s tail;
And your third fiance didn’t show;

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee’s dead;
The morning’s looking bright;
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn’t even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there’s one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came.

Theme Song Thursday:”Making Our Dreams Come True”

14 Mar

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight
Schemeel, schlemazel, Hasenfeff Inc
We’re gonna do it!

Give us any chance – we’ll take it
Read us any rule – we’ll break it
We’re gonna make our dreams come true….
Doin’ it our way

Nothin’s gonna turn us back now
Straight ahead and on the track now
We’re gonna make our dreams come true…
Doin’ it our way

There is nothing we won’t try
Never heard the word impossible
This time there’s no stopping us
We’re gonna do it

On your mark, get set and go now
Got a dream and we just know now
We’re gonna make our dream come true
And we’ll do it our way – yes our way
Make all our dreams come true
And do it our way – yes our way
Make all our dreams come true
For me and you

Music is wonderful! There’s a theme song for just about everything. Today was a very fun day in little ol’ McKinney. I went to the monthly Art Club of McKinney meeting after meeting a dear friend at Starbucks this morning. More fun and friendship, with a little dose of art. Then a few of us stopped for lunch at Snug on the Square, our favorite place to go.

Snug is one of those special places. The minute you walk in the door, there’s a special ambience, an electricity of friendship and family. There are hundreds of regulars and locals who think of Snug as their special place. Hey, it’s MY special place! Sandra, the perky pint-sized owner, had a dream of creating a cozy little coffee/cafe shop on the Square, where everyone who walks in the door becomes family. Well, she and her wonderful staff made that dream come true.

When I was thinking about my theme song for today, I thought how perfect. Someone has taken a dream, did it her way, and is making her dreams come true. She also encourages others to make their dreams happen by promoting local artists and musicians. Here’s young Ryan Cline serenading us at lunch today.

Theme Song Thursday

8 Feb

My theme for this Thursday is friends. Today, we celebrated the birthday of our dear friend, Carolyn. She says she’s 29, but we all know better. I’m pretty sure she’s over 30, seeing as she’s a grandma. But, we are all young girls when it comes to friendship and birthdays.

We met at our favorite coffee/sandwich shop in McKinney, SNUG on the Square for her birthday celebration. It was a glorious, sun-shining day. Good friends, good food, and lots of presents. Doesn’t get better than that. The FRIENDS television show theme song came to mind…

Theme song from FRIENDS…

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
(clap clap clap clap)
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A.
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
I’ll be there for you (when the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you (like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you (because you’re there for me too)

Friends may come and friends may go
This fact is sad, but true
The ones that stay are best to know
I’m glad this friend is you.

Theme Song Thursday

31 Jan

When I look into his guilty face
I’m not sure just what he did
And I hear this theme song in my head
“Here’s looking at you, kid”
