Saturday: St. Gabriel’s Spaghetti Dinner and Stepping Outside the Box

26 Apr

“We all want to break our orbits, float like a satellite gone wild in space, run the risk of disintegration. We all want to take our lives in our own hands and hurl them out among the stars.”

― David Bottoms

After gloomy days of rain and grey, today was sunny and downright warm, getting up to 89degrees. I went to my writing group, had lunch with Mandy, did some shopping, bought nothing, had an ice cream cone at Sweet Spot on the square, then came home for a long steamy walk.

I debated with myself about going to the Knights of Columbus Spaghetti dinner  Karaoke night at St. Gabriel’s.  I didn’t think I’d know anyone there and I don’t like doing things alone. I’m tired of doing things alone. But, I’ve been telling myself to step out of my little lonely box and try new things. (I talk to myself a lot)  So, I showered and went off to St. Gabriel’s.

When I walked in, Father Don was kicking off the karaoke segment with “Sweet Caroline.” He has a very nice voice, so I grabbed my phone to take a video.

I didn’t see any familiar faces, so I sat with a group people I didn’t know. I smiled, laughed, and clapped along. I struck up a conversation with the lady sitting next to me. We talked a while, exchanged pleasantries, and I gave her my card and asked her to call me some time and perhaps we could have lunch. I made a new friend. I stepped outside my box.

Teresa. “A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.”

Theme Song Thursday: Try Something New

26 Jun

Why not go out on a limb? Isn’t that where the fruit is? ~Frank Scully
I’m a creature of habit. I don’t like change. Very rarely will I order something other than my usual, go-to-written-in-stone favorite meal at a restaurant, much less go to a new place. Sandra, Daniel and Beth at Snug will attest to that. (Yogurt parfait story.) Miss Zelda and I meet at Olive Garden and I ALWAYS get the eggplant parmasean. See, I don’t do change well.

But, how will I know if something out there is better, or the food more delicious, or a new place more exciting? But then again, if where you always go, or what you always order, always makes you happy, then why change? You see my dilemma???

Yesterday, when Lynne and Karen invited me to join them for lunch at a Mexican restaurant (not on the square and I’d never been to before) for lunch, I actually said, “Sure.”

Taqueria Hernandez is on Tennessee, a couple of miles north of the square. It’s a tiny “mom and pop” type place with a handful of tables, one waitress and maybe half a dozen things on the menu. I ordered the crispy tacos and they were just like I make at home, and how my mom makes them. They were delicious. I may go back there again real soon. But, you guessed it, I’m going to order the same thing every time. (Baby steps…)

Sometimes I have to go out on a limb, isn’t that where the tacos are?
Every day is a brand new day, and each day holds new possibilities.

Here’s the theme song for today…
